You know, when I was inspired to do this session, I just had the idea and a willing model. This model is also my niece, not by blood but by life. It was inspired by a wonderful photographer I found through the wonders of Insta. But what this session turned into in post-production was so much more than I ever expected. Bay, as we call my sweet niece, recently turned 21 and is on the verge of graduating from a prestigious university. As I looked back over the images, over and over as a photographer does, it dawned on me. This wasn’t just a creative session inspired by a great photographer, it is a coming-of-age story as old as time.
A woman coming of age is a journey that is complicated and painful and joyful all at the same time. Learning to give up on what people think, learn to be yourself, take care of yourself and your time are pieces of being that we don’t often enough think about. This session she was able to take the time to laugh, smell the flowers, show her feminine, and show us that she can take her power and use it. The feminine mystique is very powerful in these images and was subconsciously intentional at best. I always WANT to portray (in these types of sessions) feminine power, but this was different.
This baby child, as she once was, has been in my life longer that she has been in this world. I have watched her grow and change and become her own person. Though, she has always been the way she is today. A little old lady to loves to laugh and spend time under a warm blanket with good people reading or another hobby doused in the language used to describe the elderly. She has always had a soul of enjoyment and comfort.
